The Transporter Upright Cargo Bike

A practical cargo bike that can transport heavy loads.

The Transporter Cargo Bike converts a standard upright bicycle into a durable rear loading cargo bike that can easily move hundreds of pounds under human power. By keeping the front of the bike in its original configuration, this cargo bike rides much the same as any cycle and offers an upright riding position that is good in a high traffic area.

The front cargo area adds to the bike’s stability.

This plan is highly adaptable to your needs, and includes a rugged frame that can carry many different types of cargo carrying systems. A sturdy flatbed cargo system that can carry a large amount of heavy cargo is detailed in the plan. The Transporter can be made to practically any wheelbase and the entire plan only requires standard bicycle components and a few lengths of round or square tubing.

The cargo area can be open or enclosed.

Since the front of the bicycle is kept in its original state, all of the levers and shifters operate normally, giving your cargo bike the feel of an ordinary cycle. A 20 inch rear wheel with a durable axle is used to increase the cargo loading capacity and offer a much lower gear range for hill climbing and starting while carrying a heavy load.

Use standard bicycle parts and basic tools.

A sturdy center stand keeps the bike level and stable while loading or unloading heavy cargo. You can build the Transporter Cargo Bike with minimal tools and using the parts you have available. Every single step of this project is detailed with high resolution photos and clear text, so even if this is your first time building a bike, you will be able to follow along at your own pace.

Atomic Zombie shows you how to build the seat, too.

Riding the Transporter Upright Cargo Bike is as easy as riding a regular bicycle. Of course, you will need to make a wider turn if you build your cargo bike as long as the one shown in the plans, but the overall length and style of the cargo bike are completely up to you.

Take your cargo bike to the beach or camping.

These days, it makes sense to leave the car at home whenever possible and get from point A to point B using cleaner transportation methods. The benefits of trading your car for a bike are too numerous to list; however, getting exercise while you save your money and the environment are certainly important. But, sometimes you will need that trunk space when you need to pickup or move some cargo along your way and let’s face it, a standard bicycle is not practical to move a large TV or a load of firewood. And, the best part - you can build it yourself!
